Handmade Arcade will be held this Saturday, November 12th, from 11:00 am - 7:00 pm at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh, PA.

This event brings a unique shopping experience to Pittsburgh with music, snacks and a Hands-on-Handmade making area. Come meet our Steel Town Etsy team (we'll be there representing Etsy - one of the event sponsors) and buy a raffle ticket to win a basket of locally made handmade items. A portion of the proceeds from the raffle will go to the Pittsburgh Center for Creative Reuse.

Review Time! Photos to Canvas

Hello Everybody! Not to long ago, I ordered a canvas with one of my favorite pictures printed on to it. A friend of mine took it. I loved how the coloring came out on it and concept of the picture is amazing. The bare bones of the easel with the human skeleton behind it. Love it.

So when I had the opportunity to put the photo to canvas, I jump at it. I love the concept of photos printed on canvas for a few reasons. The main one being, you get to ditch the frame. You can move you photo from room to room and not worry if the frame goes with the decor and what not. The canvas still allows the photo to be a focal point without the cost of a frame.
You can select several different ways to have it printed. I appreciated that since I wanted the print canvas to have a clean look. I had the photo printed so that the photo wrapped along the sides. This way it didn't stop abruptly and get cut off. Now, the photo can be viewed from all angles.

Wildcard hosts the event of the year with their Wildcard Microcraft Fall Hallo-Witch Craft Book Release Second Anniversary Party Spectacular...in 3D!

On Thursday, October 20 Wildcard is having a dual celebration: the publication of Microcrafts — a new how-to book for making teeny tiny crafts — edited and contributed to by local crochet superstar Alicia Kachmar and featuring work by Pittsburgh artists Nadia Marks Wojcik and Tamara Barker. And it’s also the Second Anniversary of the opening of Wildcard.

The event will also highlight Kachmar’s Witch Craft book from 2010, which is perfect for planning a handmade, homemade Halloween.

In addition, the Steel Town Etsy group is hosting a raffle to help local artist Kachmar with her medical bills. Winners will receive one of a set of gift baskets filled with arts & crafts by local artists.

This event is co-presented with Quirk Books, the publisher of both Microcrafts and Witch Craft.

To celebrate Wildcard’s Second Anniversary, the store is hosting a free party with games, music, food & drink to thank loyal customers and neighbors. A timeline for the events follows below:

5-7pm Crafting

Alicia Kachmar, Nadia Marks Wojcik and Tamara Barker will be on hand to demonstrate some DIY craft projects from Microcrafts and Witch Craft. This event is f amily-friendly. Free snacks for kids and books for sale. Costumes are welcome, and the first 25 families receive a free goodie bag!

7-9pm Party!

Crafting time ends as a special guest DJ comes on to celebrate Wildcard’s Second Anniversary. Both books will still be on sale, but we’ll have food, drinks (bring your ID if you’re over 21), raffles, and music!

Alicia Kachmar: A teacher turned freelance writer, crafter, and all-around DIY-er, Alicia Kachmar enjoys crocheting safety cones, mixing martinis, playing pool, biking around cities and making pies. She grew up in a creative and crafty household in Pittsburgh, needlepointing and sewing before she had really mastered reading. Most of these crafty interests took a backseat to a busy career as a New York-based museum educator/nanny/school teacher, until health travails resulted in a sort of early retirement, and twiddling-thumbs-time-in-bed became her daily routine.

She taught herself to crochet and began to dabble in all those favorite crafts from childhood.

Alicia then opened an Etsy shop called EternalSunshine, creating an entire crochet wonderland of frowning s'mores, happy balloons and everything in between. She is best known in Pittsburgh for her crocheted pierogis, which are for sale at Wildcard, and in the Travelling Craft-O-Tron machine.

Wildcard: First open in October of 2009, Wildcard has quickly become a staple in Lawrenceville and an anchor of the local business community. Wildcard sells a mix of carefully selected cards & goods from independent companies and artists around the country, as well as stocking numerous pieces by local crafters & artists. The store also hosts shows by local artists on a monthly basis. Since opening in 2009, Wildcard has earned numerous accolades in the press, including:

Selling and Accepting Gift Certificates 101

I've seen this topic up on the discussion boards a few times. And is something I wondered about for a while. How do I sell and accept Gift Certificates through/on my Etsy shop??? I would read the Etsy Blog Post about gift certificates and it always confused me. Well, I finally figured it out. And since the holidays are fast approaching, I'll now share it with you!

PLANNING & SELLING:

Step One:
Decide and write up your Gift Certificate Policies. Will they expire? Can you use them on custom orders? Can they be used at the craft shows you participate in? Will they be mailed out or emailed to the buyer? Will the certificate be sent to the buyer of the certificate or it's intended recipient. These are important questions the customer might have.

Step Two:
This is the fun part! Design your gift card. Try to make it match the overall branding of your shop. Include things like your shop name, the certificates value, and a unique code/number for yourself. See what I did here.

Step Three:
The unique code is important. Why? Several reasons. First, it keeps you organized. It helps track how many certificates you sold and lets you know what non-cash orders you can expect in the future. I suggest making a excel worksheet of the certificates you sell. This will also help keep track of the value on the certificate if it is not all used at once. Here's a rough mock up of what I'll be doing. After taking several classes in college about working with excel... I still don't know what I'm doing. But we can all stumble through the basics. It also helps you know who still owes you a balance! How to rectify that comes a little later.

Step Four:
Write up your Etsy listing. You may want to include your certificate policies in the listing as well as ideas for the buyer on why they should purchase it. Maybe their best friend wants a pair of chandelier earrings but they aren't sure what color to get. Something like that.
I suggest only doing a couple listings, a low value and high value. This way you can avoid unnecessary listing fees. And if you want to open yourself up to be contacted for a different value, you can.

ACCEPTING THE GIFT CERTIFICATE:

Step One:
Enable the payment option "other" in your Etsy shop. Click on Your Account. Then, under Shop Settings (on the left column) click Shipping & Payment. Then you enable the "other" option.

Step Two:

So a transaction has occurred. Three things can happen.

A)The customer entered the gift certificate's unique code in the Note to Seller upon checkout and the balance is covered perfectly. $25 Gift Certificate to cover a $25 order. If this is you, Move to Step Five.

B) The customer entered the gift certificate's unique code and they still have money left on the gift certificate. Now, you can mark this all down in you excel worksheet. Then, send the buyer a messenger/email notifying them of the certificate's new balance. If this is you, Move to Step Five.

C) The customer entered the gift certificate's unique code and the gift certificate is not enough to cover the whole balance. Let's say they still owe you $15. Head on over to PayPal. You need to send them an invoice. Here's the Etsy Blog Post on PayPal invoices, also. Hit the request Money Tab , then the create invoice button.

Now, fill out the invoice. I've decided to just use the default template. Add your shop logo, check that your information is correct, and the recipients (of the invoice) email address. This email address you can get off of the Etsy Transaction information. For the Invoice information, the invoice number should be the certificate's unique code.

Then fill out the rest according to the transaction. The item ID should be your Etsy Transaction ID. The discount I use to refer to the gift certificate. Term and Conditions, I put my certificate polices in there, also. Add a note if you like.

Now, send the invoice. And move on to Step Five.

Step Five:

Ship & Celebrate!

OTHER IMPORTANT TIPS:
+ Make sure the user of the gift certificate knows to include the gift certificate's unique code in the Note to Seller upon checkout. Put it in the listing, mail instructions with the certificate, or instruct so directly on the certificate.
+You may also want to make it a policy that you won't ship until payment is made in full. And make sure the customer is aware of it.
+I've given my shoppers the option of mailing or emailing the certificate. But I'm still charging a small shipping fee either way. This will help cover my listing and other fees. You don't have to do this. Just something to consider.

Fundraising & Localfest at Bocktown Beer & Grill

Meet and greet with some of the local purveyors, artisans and friends that make Bocktown possible. Learn more about Buy Fresh Buy Local and how they support and grow our Pittsburgh area and surrounding communities, and see how you can too.

The event will also feature craft beer tastings, wine samples, and live music from Pete Bush from Pete Bush and the Hoi Polloi.

Our team Captain will be there vending and selling raffle tickets for the Steel Town Etsy fundraiser to help benefit one of our members, Alicia Kachmar of Eternal Sunshine, who suffers from Ulcerative Colitis. She has had the second of three surgeries to rid her of the disease and, despite having insurance, has mounting medical bills. More fundraising activities will be coming in September, so watch for news of those in a future post.

Tonight's basket features items such as books donated by Quirk Books - Booze Cakes and On A Stick (80 Party-Perfect Recipes), a Pub Sweater donated by Kate of WakulaWorks , a lovely necklace donated by Lucy of Belmonili, a $20.00 gift certificate donated by Chrissie of Party Paper Scissors, and an art print donated by Kathryn of Go Carr Go.

Raffle Tickets are $1.00 each or 10 for $5.00. You need not be present to win. The winner will be contacted and can make arrangements to pick up the basket at Bocktown at a later date.

1)Tell us about yourself...

I’m a 34 year old artist living in Pittsburgh, transplanted from the South via the Midwest. I have an MFA in Metal Design from East Carolina University.

2)When you're not creating, what do you do?

I juggle a lot of things, including several jobs—I’ve been working at the Society for Contemporary Craft in the Strip District for 2 years, and in the Fall I’m beginning a new position as the Gallery Director at Slippery Rock University, as well as teaching jewelry and metalsmithing at CCAC. I also like to run in the evenings, as well as knit and crochet, and I’m learning to home brew beer.

3)When and what made you decide to become an artist?

I had my first portfolio at age 12. I’m still good friends with my art teacher from middle school, who first encouraged my work in art. I was lucky to go to a high school for visual and performing art, where I discovered metalsmithing at age 15. From there I got a BFA in Sculpture, taught for a few years at a community college in Charlotte, NC, and then went to get my MFA in 2003. Since then I’ve been in hundreds of exhibitions across the US, Japan, Italy, Spain, and Germany, and my work is published in 8 books.

4)Where do you get your inspiration from and how does it affect your work?

For the past few years I’ve been inspired by Pittsburgh, especially the rusty metal and urban decay. My line of Jewelry N’at is inspired by Pittsburghese, and the intense pride that Pittsburghers have for their city. I wanted to be able to offer handmade jewelry that expresses that pride at prices most Pittsburghers can afford.

5)What drew you into joining Steel Town Etsy?

Since my work is so inspired by Pittsburgh, I wanted to be associated with a group of makers who represent Pittsburgh.

6)What is most appealing to you about Handmade?

I’m a huge advocate of handmade! I love the individuality of items made by hand, the way things function, knowing the people who make things, supporting the local economy, using sustainable and/or recycled materials. I could go on and on!

7)What are your top 5 favorite (books, websites, blogs, movies) and why should we (read, look at, watch) them?

Hmmmm, Books: No One Belongs Here More Than You by Miranda July is brilliant. I also highly recommend The Omnivore’s Dilemma, and all of Michael Pollan’s other books. I like everything Chuck Klosterman writes, like Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs, of course Perks of Being a Wallflower is a Pittsburgh favorite, and I like books by Bukowski, Tom Robbins, Paul Theroux, Elizabeth Crane, and plenty more. I haven’t had a TV in years, so I read a lot. Websites/blogs: I love Art Jewelry Forum, Klimt02, and Crafthaus for jewelry-related stuff. I read Salon, Huffington Post, and Mother Jones for news. I download music (legally) from emusic, and I’m addicted to twitter and facebook. I don’t really watch many movies because 2 hours is a long time for me to have free time, but I listen to npr as much as possible, and I LOVE Radiolab, This American Life, and All Things Considered.

8)Who are some of your favorite Handmade artists?

I love my ceramics by Martina Lantin, Steven Cheek, Mel Griffin, and ex-bf Bo Bedilion, as well as all my anonymous mugs and plates. I have favorite jewelry by Robert Lee Morris, Jillian Moore, Amy Weiks, Opulent Project, and Miles Rountree, and I want some pieces by Caitie Sellers, Dan DiCaprio, and Bob Ebendorf. I also love my handmade bag by Jill Harrell, and my scarf by Ping Wu.

9)What question(s) do you have for other artists like yourself?

How do you find time to balance everything? How do you market yourself?

10)What are you top 3 favorite stops/places in Pittsburgh and why do you love them so much?

It’s hard to pick just 3! I love PNC Park—the view is amazing and its within walking distance from my studio. (Let’s go Bucs!) The Aviary is a great place to visit and the penguins are super cute. The Mattress Factory always has thought-provoking exhibits, and their garden is pretty magical. I guess all my favorite places are on the Northside!

11)What do you want to see from Steel Town Etsy in the future?

Things like this interview are great. I think its important for people to understand that there is a real person behind the handmade object, and that anyone can be a maker, as long as they realize how much hard work it takes.

12) What do you see your self doing in the future?

I’d like to fix up a house on the Northside and get a dog . I’ll also continue my art career in Pittsburgh, as well as continue to get involved with local arts organizations and projects.

The Perfect Treasury!

One of my favorite things to do on Etsy is to make Treasuries. If you're anything like me, you'll click from page to page searching for those perfect items. Before you know it, an hour and half went by. Your end product is a beautiful curation of handmade and vintage items. But here's the thing... Are you maximizing your and the featured artists exposure with your treasury??? There are several things you can do to make sure you time is worth the effort. Maybe you'll achieve the Holy Grail of Etsy... The Front Page!

Pretty in Pink
Make your treasury beautiful. Take your time curating it. Consider your theme and/or color scheme. Maybe you only want to pick a few colors for your treasury. Or pick a fun theme like your favorite book or vacation spot. Let your artistry shine through your treasury. When people see a treasury they like, it can provoke them to gander at the curators shop. Remember to choose items with photos that are well done, too.
In the Mix
Pick a good mix of items. Include handmade,vintage and even supplies. Try not to include more then one item of the same type. I know there are lots of beautiful earrings on Etsy, but resist putting them all in one treasury. It's good to include a variety of items to keep the onlookers interest, but it's considerate to the featured artists as well.
Tag! You're it!
You've probably seen this suggestion a hundred times but it is so important. Tag your treasuries. Consider tagging with the color scheme you used, items featured, general theme, and of course, any teams you participate in (like Steel Town Etsy!!!) If you still have tags and no ideas on how to use them you can always check the tags the artist put on there featured item.
Word.
Let everyone know about your amazing treasury. Post links to in on your website, blog, and Facebook. Mention your current treasury in your Shop Announcements or your About Me page on Etsy. Make sure all your Etsy Team members know about it, too. Put it in the discussion thread on the team page.

You spend a lot of time on your treasuries. Right??? You've made it into a beautiful display of handmade and vintage items. It features several talented artists who you know take care in creating their products. And YOU SHOULD BE THANKED!!! If you are featured in a treasury, remember to thank the curator! They worked hard for you. You know that at least the other artist featured will see your item. Those are all potential buyers. If you don't remember to thank, you risk alienating yourself from your community and losing an opportunity to be featured again.
Curators should also consider sending a little message to featured artist. Nothing long winded just something like, “Loved your item. Featured it in my treasury.”

A great treasury can drive traffic to all those that participate in it. Remember these tips, have fun with it and check out the treasuries below!!!

Life Lessons Learned at Craft Shows

If you pay attention when you're out in public, especially when vending at craft shows, you can learn valuable lessons. Some apply to your craft business, some to just life in general. Lessons I've been learning that I'm trying to better implement are as follows:

1) Listen.
Hear your customers. Learn from them. If they like what you're making except for... listen and make adjustments for the next time or offer to do custom work. Look at each show as an opportunity to perform consumer research.

2) Smile.
This is especially important when your day isn't going well. People don't want to be around unhappy negative people. Don't keep potential customers away by complaining about your day or looking miserable. Sometimes others are having a bad day too and something as simple as a smile might make things just a little easier for them. Even if they don't buy something from you one day, you never know when you might see them again.

3) Pay attention.
Some items get attention from customers regardless of how you display them. Others may not get noticed at all. Pay attention to which items your customers are looking at and what they're saying as they do. Make notes of what works and what doesn't and continue fine tuning your display at each show.

4) Follow through.
We all get busy and only have a set number of hours in each day. Try to prioritize tasks in terms of follow through. If I owe someone an answer, I don't want to keep them waiting and yet sometimes I get busy and let things slide. When it happens to me I get truly frustrated, especially if having to wait for information from someone else holds me up so I'm trying to do a better job of following through myself. With customers especially, they're more likely to return for future purchases if you do well with this.

5) Be consistent.
This goes along with follow through as well. If you tell people something they will likely remember it even if you don't. People know other people. You never know who they'll talk to. Due to this, if you tell one person x but do y, you can be fairly certain it will come back to haunt you. You never want to find yourself in a situation where you told customer #1 something, then tell customer #2 the opposite and have them call you on it. While I haven't been guilty of this, I have been on the receiving end and can tell you it's not a good position to find yourself in.

6) Treat others the way you want them to treat you.
This lesson is simple and basic and one most of us should have learned as children. Some of us try to live our lives according to that lesson and some people appear to have forgotten it or never learned it. Try not to let them impact your actions. I feel it's still important to keep in mind as I navigate my way through life. Setting a good example just might rub off on others. If you're nice and friendly and offer to watch a neighbor's booth while they go to the restroom, chances are good they'll do the same for you.

7) You can't make everyone happy all the time.
The best you can do is make the majority of people happy. There will always be at least one person that you can't please no matter what you do. There are always things going on in other people's lives that impact their perspective that you have no control over. Try not to let them affect you negatively.

8) Have fun!
Life is too short not to find a way to enjoy yourself. If you're vending at a craft show, I'm guessing you're trying to find a way to make money doing something you enjoy. Even if it's an off day and you're not making money that day, find a way to have fun at the event. Enjoy interacting with your customers. Get to know your neighbors. If there's music at the event, enjoy the opportunity to hear a new performer. By looking at the positive side of things, you'll most likely have the best day possible given any situation you may find yourself in.

I realize there are many lessons I've missed but the above are themes that seem to come up frequently. These are items I'm trying to improve my implementation of. I am by no means trying to claim I'm an expert at them. I am human after all and therefore imperfect. Despite this, I'm trying to do what I can to improve. What lessons have you learned that are particularly useful? I'd love to hear about them. Let's learn from each other.

Fall Forest Fashion: In a Word? Leafy!

We're fresh from Frick Park Fashion Scene! What's new and fresh in woodland style? Plump berry and tall and twiggy are the season's most envied shapes. The hottest looks are trampled-grunge and earthy-crunchy, and a glimpse of nude branch is oh-so-sexy! Hats are all the rage in accessories as acorn caps make their debut. Brown is the new green- last season's greens look old and whithered next to the colors du jour, vibrant golds, oranges, and rusts. An occasional crimson or plum is daring and avant garde, and reveals itself to hushed oohs, ahs, chirps, and squeaks. A hint of what's to come? Perhaps...

Steel Town Etsy Members Join Roving Hordes of Zombies Invading Market Square

If some of you have been wondering if some of the Steel Town Etsy members are really crafty zombies, we now have photographic evidence that some of them are.

On 10/10/10 the dead walked again as the It's Alive Show hosted Zombie Fest as a food drive for the Pittsburgh food bank and an attempt to break the official Guinness world record for the largest gathering of zombies. Pittsburgh has held the record in the past but was beaten by Seattle last year. The official count at the end of the day was 4,590 zombies which, for now, is enough to bring the record back to Pittsburgh where it belongs. Among those zombies, were several members of Steel Town Etsy, some of whom were even vendors.

Market Square was the perfect setting for the event and it provided a wonderful backdrop for many great shots throughout the day.

It was wonderful to see so many creative people come together for a good cause, and good, clean, if not somewhat bloody, fun. Local artists and a couple of small, local businesses sold their wares at the event, and the zombies in attendance showed that they had plenty of brains as they purchased many items from these vendors. Lynne, who made the brains on chains seen below as well as the zombie sachets to chase away the scent of decay at the end of the day commented, "You know, even though some of the zombies look really scary, they're actually really nice."

Events like this help make Pittsburgh a fantastic city to live in and help promote the local art scene. Thanks to all the zombies who supported the local arts and businesses at this event. It was wonderful seeing so many like-minded people in one place.

Alicia Kachmar, with her Etsy shop Eternal Sunshine, creates some of the most adorable and original crocheted creations you can imagine. Her crocheted pierogi have quickly become a favorite item in the The Travelling Pittsburgh Craft-O-Tron Machine and her new book will soon become a favorite among crafters and Halloween fans in general.

Instead of the usual member feature, this will focus on her new book: Witch Craft: Wicked Accessories, Creepy-Cute Toys, Magical Treats, and More! First, Steel Town Etsy would like to extend a hearty congratulations to Alicia for having a book published! She's co-editor of the book as well as a contributor of four of the projects featured within. The projects are all adorable, original, and the well-written instructions make them all seem easy to replicate.

The book is available in Pittsburgh at Barnes and Noble (their display is pictured above) and Borders, as well as from Amazon.com.

Our favorite project? Why, the ruby slippers on the cover, of course! They're modeled quite fabulously by Alicia herself. Other favorite projects are tiny, edible jack-o-lanterns created from tangerines and oranges, freaky finger food, and creepy crocheted bones.

Cooler Fall temperatures bring out the desire to bake, create, and decorate. While this book doesn't include Halloween decorating tips, it has plenty of ideas to indulge your desire to create, both in the kitchen and at your craft table. Some of the projects would also make adorable additions to your Halloween decor.

Name Contest & Decorating: The NEW Pittsburgh 'Local Handmade' Vending Machine!

Announcing the yet-to-be-named Pittsburgh traveling craft vending machine!! It may look like any ordinary cigarette vending machine right now, but soon it will be embellished, jazzed up and filled with local handmade creations! AND WE NEED YOUR HELP TO NAME AND DECORATE IT!

Inspired by the Art-o-Mat machines that offer mini OOAK art, our machine will offer a sampling of what is being handmade in Pittsburgh. Instead of each piece being different, we are embracing our industrial heritage and offering items that are crafted clones of each other like our own Andy Warhol's repeated printings.

The goal of the machine project is to spread the word about the local craft scene by placing the machine in different locations throughout the city - bars, art centers, welcome centers, museums.etc. There will be an under-glass posting area on the machine to advertise local craft events and craft groups. The idea is to share not only access to the crafts themselves but where else they can be found in a store, online and at local markets. Each item will have the biz card of the crafter that made the item, along with the facebook page (to be unveiled once the machine is named!) for the machine so they can post happy customer pics and find out where the machine is going to be next. They even get a folded biz card for the machine with a mini button attached instead of a pack of matches!! The machine will even have its own Facebook page, where all of the current handmade goods in the machine will be displayed via photo.

Bring some E6000 (use a Michael's 40% off coupon) and some scrabble tiles, dominoes, glass globs, random fun stuff, steampunk or Pittsburgh-related items, etc., and we will artfully mosaic the machine into something eye-catching and snazzy.

*Note- Please make sure there are no sharp edges or anything that would catch anyone or their clothes.

The machine will stay at Wildcard after the Open House for a trial run to work out any kinks. It is so wonderful to have someone who supports and loves local crafts like Rebecca to do this.

STE Takes on Lawrenceville Little Flea

We went, we vended, we bought, we roasted. Tam of Barker's Herbs & Heirlooms, Kathryn of Go Carr Go, and I (SilentLotus Creations) headed to Lawrenceville this past Saturday to take part in the charming and eclectic Little Flea! The Lawrenceville Little Flea is a weekly neighborhood marketplace that happens every Saturday at 36th & Butler, with rotating local vendors of both typical flea market fare and handcrafted goods. From 8am - 3pm, the three of us peddled our handmade creations and vintage goods in the sweltering heat with 12 other vendors, using the temp and hot sun as an excuse to seek out thirst- and tummy-quenching treats from Butler Street's yummy coffee and bake shops (thanks for the iced coffee & chai and vegan cupcakes, Espresso A Mano and Dozen). :)

Tam indulges my picture-taking urges and oversees our tent. :)

The other vendors were in good spirits, chatting and laughing with one another and with flea shoppers. It was great to meet the friendly bunch, who provided us with some handmade, vintage, and thrifted bargains when we needed a break from our tables. I found an old rocking chair and vintage pieces to use in my jewelry making. :) There were clothes, dishes, photographs, textiles, chairs, tools and hardware, and plenty of supplies for upcycled art and craft projects. Chris from Signworks managed to sell a ginormous disco ball- wish I had a picture of that guy rolling away his enormous (seriously, I betcha two people could curl up inside) purchase, the glass tiles flashing in the sun and blinding passersby. lol

Little Flea.

Customers were friendly, too, and curious, quick to ask questions, join in a conversation, and or express support of our wares. Sales were okay, but I'm told there has been a much better turnout in previous weeks. And, in any case, I witnessed plenty of folks carrying their finds happily away. Like any market, success ebbs and flows on any particular day. I'd definitely recommend giving Little Flea and the Lawrenceville area shops a visit as either a vendor or shopper. It was a great day, and the rotating vendors promise new treasures every week!

Tell us a bit about yourself name, location, affiliations, personal stuff.

My name is Rachel Rech. I'm an aspiring Costume Designer going to Point Park University, and will graduate with a BFA in Costume Design next year. I live in the Swissvale section of Pittsburgh with my boyfriend Anton, at Trundle Manor, a museum/house of oddities Wunderkammer. We have a collection of creepy curiosities including dead things in jars, vintage taxidermy, disturbing old medical tools, coffins, steampunk sculptures and various artworks! We are open for tours by appointment only, and the website is www.thessoa.com. I'm also affiliated with The Drifters Car Club of Pittsburgh, of which Anton is President. We have a car show every year, The Steeltown Shakedown, which will be held on Sept. 11 this year at the Twin Hi-Way Drive in. There will be pre-65 hot rods, DIY and vintage vendors, live bands, a pin-up contest, in-person tattoo artist and pinstriper, and a vintage movie on the big screen at night! Apart from creating things, what do you do?

Besides going to school for costume design, I love to give tours of the museum, watch old horror movies, bake, paint, cruise in our 31 Ford, and dress up like a glamorous villain from the movies! Oh, and when autumn comes, I also love to frighten children at Kennywood Fright Nights.

What first made you want to become an artist?
I've always been weird, and I've known since I was little that art in one form or another was what I was meant to do. I've been obsessed with designing costumes and clothing since I can remember.

Please describe your creative process how, when, materials, etc.

As far as my aprons and things go, I have a stock of colorful fabric that is constantly giving me ideas. Most of what I have is scrap or found material, so most of what I make is one of a kind. I always have several projects going at once, although many of them are for myself!

Name your top five places to be in the Pittsburgh area, books/authors, movies/TV shows, songs/musical groups, and web sites besides Etsy.

My biggest TV influences include The It's Alive! Show, The Addams Family, The Twilight Zone, Pee Wee's Playhouse. My biggest Movie influences: Ed Wood, Cry-Baby, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

How do you promote your work?

That's something I could improve on, actually. I try to put myself out there mainly through Etsy, Facebook and word of mouth. It's all in who you know!

What advice would you give to artists who are new to the Pittsburgh craft scene?

Be original and create what makes you happy. Don't jump on a trendy bandwagon or steal someone else's ideas! If you want recognition, you have to stand out!

A Trip to Creative Reuse Pittsburgh- The Coolest Way to Make Eco-friendly Art!

Last Wednesday, I and three of my best crafty pals and fellow STE admins, headed to the awesomely eco-friendly Creative Reuse Pittburgh (Pgh), a local green organization that accepts unwanted materials for reuse and sells them uber cheap to the creative public! According to their website, Creative Reuse Pgh, which was founded in 2007 and became a project of the Pennsylvania Resources Council in February, is a nonprofit organization that seeks to "keep perfectly good stuff out of the landfill, provide opportunities for people to put it to good (re)use, help forward the movement toward a greener globe, and encourage folks to explore." Sound too idyllic? Maybe... except for that they actually make all of that happen!

A haven to those who can make something out of anything (or anything out of something), the organization's brick-and-mortar stash-shop is located within Construction Junction (who donated the space) on Meade Street in Point Breeze. Creatively cluttered, the two-level space is packed from floor to ceiling with everything you can imagine that could be re-used in making art and given new life. Exploring the nooks and crannies, boxes and piles is really an artsy flea market/thrift store shopper's dream, and during our trip revealed wooden dowels, vintage fabric and notions, office supplies, containers, vintage art, books filled with fabulous wallpaper and fabric samples, random hardware, rubber toys, paper of all types, glitter, hardware, old lab beakers, and so much more!

Their stock includes not only unusual things you may not find anywhere else, but items that sell at craft stores for 20 times the price! The fact that these wares are priced unbelievably dirt-cheap ("starving artist" anyone?) just adds to the already-high bliss factor, as does the fact that each item purchased keeps landfills from growing and leaves the earth a little cleaner and greener. :)

Tamara of Barker's Herbs and Heirlooms, Lynne of Charmed By Nature, Niffer of 19 Moons, and I (Kylie of SilentLotus Creations) had a fabulous visit, all coming away with finds from there and Construction Junction downstairs. Some of us even left feeling a bit "lighter" after donating our own materials to Creative Reuse Pgh- Nif donated "nif"ty payphone and typewriter hardware and Lynne donated -uh- a big box of rubber poop (don't ask). All of us are big on repurposing vintage or discarded materials in unique ways, me just in the last year or so and mostly from their influence. :) Check out our shops linked to above to see what craftastic creations we each come up with!

Creative Reuse Pgh gets new donations regularly, making it a potential new treasure hunt each time you visit. But despite all of their current finds, they can always take more! Next time you have a box or stack of something ready to be discarded or taken to Goodwill, consider stopping by to see if what you have is something they can use. Donating your discards is easy, and much appreciated. And while there, browse for some new goodies. Need creative inspiration or some obscure piece of something that will make your art piece or craft just perfect? I highly recommend making a trip to Creative Reuse Pgh to purchase materials- what you are wishing for just may await you there. :)

Just keep in mind that shopping open to the public only on Wednesdays from 12-5. Other hours are available by appointment only, so if you can't get there on a Wednesday, make sure to give them a call at (412) 202-4036 or email them to set up a different time to go.

It's time to meet another Steel Town Etsian and find out more about them! Introducing Malina Bowen of AtlantisAK Jewelry on Etsy. So glad to have you on our team, Malina!

Tell us a bit about yourself, name, location, affiliations, personal stuff.
I’m Malina, aka Lee, and I make and design jewelry. I am hoping to expand to other projects shortly to further expand my creativity. I currently live in the McKeesport area East of Pittsburgh with my Fiancée, John. I grew up on a farm in Austin, Pennsylvania. The population in Austin is about 600 people maximum, so everyone knew everyone. My back yard was 10+ acres of land and forest and there was always something to do. This gave lots of room for creativity. I hold Austin dear to my heart and am hoping to move back some day. Coming to Pittsburgh to further my education has been a great experience and journey.

Apart from creating things, what do you do?
I keep to simple things, such as reading, watching movies, shopping and baking. My favorite genres of books are fantasy, such as Stephen King and Anne Rice. For movies, it’s gotta be action, adventure or an awesome horror. 3D makes it even better! I’ve also had a lifelong love for cooking and baking and use my grandmother’s old Betty Crocker cookbook for old home-made goodies. .

What first made you want to become an artist?
Well, most of my family has some sort of artistic talent, so you could say that it runs in my blood to be creative. My grandmother (father’s mother) paints, my grandfather (father’s dad) owns his own woodshop, my mom quilts and has done a lot of cross stitch. It’s a long list of what my relatives do, so I think they’ve all kind of inspired me to do something.

Please describe your creative process how, when, materials, etc.
Honestly I can say that there isn’t an organized ‘creative process’. I like to call it a ‘creative mess’ because when I start making something, it rarely looks like the original idea, if there even was an idea in the first place. Typically I’m more creative and energetic around 5pm through 3am…so this is when most of my work gets done. The materials that I use vary greatly, from sterling silver, to brass, to glass, gemstone and occasionally plastic or Lucite beads. I make sure to keep a variety of materials because not everyone has the same tastes. Re-using or up-cycling things tends to be the most interesting for me because it’s always great to make something new out of something old. There’s also that destructive process involved too, which it’s always fun to tear stuff apart.

What handmade possession do you most cherish?
There are actually two hand-made items that I cherish the most. The first one is what my grandmother (my mom’s mom) had hand quilted for me. My grandmother passed in ’95 when I was 8 years old, so I didn’t get much of a chance to know her. The memories I had of her were always nice and happy. What she made for me was a baby quilt of simple squares and design that I’ve had since birth. It’s now an ugly ragged thing that’s been loved to death over 24 years and has always been close to me wherever I’ve gone. It’s one of the things I brought with me from my home town. The other item was made by Raven, a Native American Spiritualist who was a very close friend. She helped me out when I needed her the most and put me on the path coming to Pittsburgh. Raven passed about 3 years ago due to cancer, so I still miss her greatly. I didn’t get to say goodbye. What she made for me was a large table doily of my favorite colors...green, white and black. What advice would you give to artists who are new to the Pittsburgh craft scene?I’d say:-Do what you love. Because, if you do what you love then it’ll be inspiring to continue for many years.-Make friends join a Team! Friends help out and are great for getting word out about your projects. Teams are great for meeting new people and getting information.-Be patient. It takes a lot of work, patience and time to become successful with crafting.-Don’t burn yourself out…if you feel yourself losing interest, take a break and start again later. I find myself going a few days without crafting only to have a sudden creative streak that lasts for days on end.

What are your favorite features on Etsy? What new features would you like to see?
One of the features I’m really wanting to see soon is managing multiple shops on one account. It’s incredibly hard to start a new store with no feedback, no friends, nothing. I’m hoping that when this feature comes around, that when you make your other shops, the feedback and hearts you have on the first one will be reflected on the others. It’s hard starting from square one again with no feedback or ‘trust’ in the community.

How do you promote your work?
I use Twitter, Facebook, CraftGawker, my Blog and word of mouth to promote myself. I paid once to get exposure but never made a sale and hardly any hearts…It didn’t seem worth it when, for free, at the right places I could get sales and many more hearts for no cost.In five years I'd like to be...Ideally, I hope to marry a dark, handsome prince and live in a fantasy land castle far, far away... But if that doesn’t happen, I wouldn’t mind to be able to either have my own brick and mortar store for my creations and/or supplies…or be able to support myself from home off of my Etsy sales and never have to travel to work a 9-5 job again.

Tell us a bit about yourself name, location, affiliations, personal stuff.
My name is Nick and I live in Pittsburgh with my fiancee Megan of That's What She Thread. We’re originally from Buffalo, NY. I am a self-taught Graphic Designer with a love for t shirts. I've got a number that are older than Megan is!

Apart from creating things, what do you do?
Creating is basically what I do! Currently I work as a Graphic Designer at this great local Health Food Store in the Strip District. Other than that I like spending time at home cooking, hiking, watching Mystery Science Theater 3000 (Yes, I have every single episode ever recorded) and taking photographs.

Please describe your creative process how, when, materials, etc.
Many of my t shirt designs are actually a compilation of photographs I take personally. I generally take my camera with me when we go out for a walk and most of the time I will see something that will strike me as looking great on a shirt. For example: My "Don't Fear The Meter" design was taken in the South Side, "All Mixed Up" has some photos from a vacation to Florida, "And Sew On" and "That's What She Thread" is Megan's sewing machine, "Crossbone Boulevard" was taken out the car window of the overpass on Crosstown Boulevard, etc.

What advice would you give to artists who are new to the Pittsburgh craft scene?
If you have a creative idea, go for it! This is a great city for networking and there are so many supportive art-lovers. If you find something you love and feel passionate about, others will certainly recognize that. And it's great to get compliments on my stuff from people who appreciate my work as well.

How do you promote your work?
Megan and I wear the shirts as much as we can, but now that the summer is here I've been applying to vend at a bunch of the TONS of Pittsburgh's local art markets. I've also designed my own website (http://www.jetpackagenda.com/) and give away coupons at shows. My Facebook page is a great way to network as well; I try to occasionally advertise sales on there.

Tell us a bit about yourself name, location, affiliations, personal stuff.

BitsyKids is actually a mom-and-daughter operation. Ruth (the mom) is the artistic talent – making hats and quilts, coming up with more great stuff to sell. Sarah (the kid) is the one who runs the shop – managing the website and etsy shop, filling orders, that sort of thing. We've both lived in Squirrel Hill for 30 years (Ruth for a little longer!), except for a brief jaunt to San Francisco for a few years – we just moved back to town last year, and we're thrilled to be here – we love Pittsburgh!

Apart from creating things, what do you do?

Ruth is busy working part-time and volunteering for various arts organizations around town, but any free time she has is spent creating things. In addition to making the baby hats and quilts that we sell, she also knits, crochets and makes quilts for grown-ups, plus she's an excellent cook.

Sarah doesn't create anything that we sell in the shop, but she's currently teaching herself bookbinding and learning to do letterpress printing. She'll be starting her own letterpress business soon, printing cards and other stationery with designs by a few of her fabulously talented friends.

We both love to read too, and we live two blocks from Schenley Park, so we love to go walking when the weather is nice!

What first made you want to become an artist?

Neither of us really set out with the intention of being an artist. We both love the arts, and we've been involved in various art forms our whole lives. Sarah took art classes at the museum starting when she was 4, became involved in theater when she was 16, studied stage management at Carnegie Mellon, and went on to be a professional stage manager for several years.

Ruth learned needlecrafts from her grandmothers when she was a little girl, and as a teenager, her mom taught her to sew her own clothes. Finally, as an adult, she discovered quilting and put those sewing skills to a new use. She loves using fiber, pattern and color to create beautiful things.

Please describe your creative process how, when, materials, etc.

Ruth is the creative mind behind BitsyKids, and her process mostly revolves around using brightly colored yarn in fun ways. When she's at a yarn shop, she'll browse the hat patterns for ideas, but for the most part, she just makes up her hats as she goes along. She'll change colors or add polka dots as the mood strikes her, and then when she gets close to the top, she decides what sort of pom pom will finish it off perfectly. No two hats are alike!

What handmade possession do you most cherish?

S: I have so many great Mom-made things, but I think my most cherished would have to be the baby quilt she made me. It's a checkerboard of red squares, with lots of other bright colors mixed in, and little red ribbons in the corners. It sits on the bed in my office (aka our guest room), so I see it every day.

R: I have a collection of crocheted doilies made by my grandmother. They’re huge, ruffled and take forever to starch and iron, but are wonderfully fanciful and remind me of her.

We haven't been in the Pittsburgh craft scene very long ourselves, but getting involved in the community would definitely be the best advice we could give. Joining Steel Town Etsy, going to Pittsburgh Craft Collective events, and checking out the local craft shows, have all helped us get to know other Pittsburgh crafters and get ideas and help in running our shop. Go out and meet people! That's our advice.

How do you promote your work?

We mostly promote through word-of-mouth. We've told all of our friends about our shop, and asked them to tell theirs, and to think of us when they need to buy baby gifts, and that seems to have worked. A lot of our sales come from people who heard about us from friends. Other than that, we've participated in a few Steel Town Etsy promos, and we're looking forward to doing even more!

Tell us a bit about yourself name, location, affiliations, personal stuff.

Hi, I'm Gemma (Gem of Lexi and Gem), a stay at home mom of two great kids, Lexi and Connor. I'm married to my high school sweetheart.

I, Lexi (the other half of Lexi and Gem), am currently a junior at North Allegheny High School and hope to one day be a Veterinarian. We live in the Ingomar area of the North Hills and are life long Pittsburghers!

Apart from creating things, what do you do?

Gem: I like to hike and garden. I really enjoy cooking and having dinner with friends.

Lexi: I like art, watching movies with friends, baking cookies and shopping.

We both love to travel, and we also volunteer together at Animal Friends as doggy foster parents.

What first made you want to become artists?

It wasn't really a conscious decision. We've always enjoyed doing crafts together, from the time Lexi was a little girl. We've done almost every craft imaginable, from finger painting to candle making. Once we became more serious about becoming artists, we started taking classes and workshops. Starting our business on Etsy was Lexi's crazy little side project that grew totally out of control (in a good way!).

Please describe your creative process how, when, materials, etc.

When we do gemstone pieces, it's kind of a free for all- we pull out the stones and the ideas start flowing. With all of the colors, shapes, and sizes the possibilities are neverending. When we work with Precious Metal Clay (PMC) to make the fine silver pieces however, the process is much more structured. The nature of the clay demands that ideas already be in place before the creating begins. We often sketch out ideas and cut out templates before we start rolling the clay. Felting is a bit of a mystery in that we choose the colors but the flowers design themselves, the wool being sort of in control. We are often inspired by nature and things around us, and current styles and trends play a role when in designing our pieces.

What handmade possession do you most cherish?

Gem: favorite handmade pieces are the ones my kids have made. I have their framed artwork hanging throughout our home. I truly loved the Christmas tree we had decorated when the kids were in elementary school, the ornaments were almost completely handmade, I particularly loved the origami garland we made together, sadly it's no longer with us.

Lexi: My favorite handmade piece is the ceramic Merry-Go-Round my mom painted for me when I was little.

How To Make Your Own Banner

Hello! My name is Erin, from Creek Bed Threads, and I'm going to be doing a few guest posts on the STE blog here and there. This tutorial, which is also posted on my blog, is great for when you want to change up the look of your Etsy shop or blog quickly and easily.

Today I am going to show you how to make an Etsy or blogger banner for free, using the online photo editing program called picnik! Etsy banners are very simple to make, but can often be very frustrating if you're not used to using photo software. For those of you without an Etsy shop, but with a blog, it's also nice to have a banner stating your name and what you do at the top of your blog, rather than just text. This will teach you how to do that! Please note that you can click each image to enlarge it.

I'm going to use a standard Etsy banner size to do this, which is 760 pixels wide by 100 pixels tall. If you're not familiar with pixels, it's ok, you really don't need to be. It's basically just the way computers measure size, similar to inches or centimeters. A one by one pixel square is just a very very tiny dot on your computer screen.

First, let me give you the starting template. This is just a plain old rectangle, but I've colored it a very slight gray. This color will not necessarily show up in your final banner unless you want it to, but it's easier to see in picnik.

To start, click on the image below. It will open in a new window (it is necessary to open it in a new window in order to get the correct size). Then right click the image, and save it to your computer somewhere where you will remember it. Feel free to rename it however you'd like.

Now head over to picnik. You'll see this:

Go ahead and click on 'Get started now!' You'll then want to click 'Upload photos' and choose the image that you just saved.

Now you will see the gray box in picnik. We're ready to get going now!

Click the tab at the top that says "Create". Below that, click on "Text".

For now, we're going to leave the gray box - we can change it later. Instead, we're going to go ahead and add some text, like your blog or shop name, and a tag line. To do this, click on the "text" button. In the box, type your blog/shop name, I'll use Creek Bed Threads. Click "Add". Now you can change the color to whatever you'd like. Remember, we'll change the background color in a minute. Look for the "text properties" box and click whichever color you'd like. To change the font, click any font on the left side menu. Make sure you don't choose a "Premium" font, though, you have to pay for these! There are a lot of great free fonts available.

You can also resize your text by dragging the corners of the text box. To add additional text, just head back to the box in the top left, type your additional text, and click "Add".

Now we're going to add some color behind the text. Click on the "Stickers" link, which is right next to the "Text" link you clicked earlier.

Look along the left hand side of your screen. You'll see many different options. The first thing we want to do is change the background color. To do this, we're just going to add a solid colored rectangle. Scroll down until you see "Geometric" and click on it. Click on your image and drag it to create a new box. Use the sizing handles to make it about the same size, or a little larger, than the original gray box. Now you can adjust the color of the rectangle by choosing a color in the "sticker properties" box. Just click anywhere on the colors shown to choose the color you want. I've shown this one in pink.

But what happened to our text???? With the rectangle selected, right click and click "send to back". This will put it behind your text!

Now is the time you may want to play with placement, colors, etc. Each time you click on an object (your rectangle, text, etc.) you will see a properties box. This is where you can change the color, font, etc.

If you'd like a border around your image, add another rectangle in the same manner as before, but size it slightly smaller than your image. This will create a "border". Again, it will hide your text at first, but right click and click "send backward" ("send to back" will push it too far back). Repeat the right click - "send backward" until you can see all of your text.

Ok, now it's time to make it pretty. Make sure you're still on the "Stickers" menu. Now you can scroll around and check out all of the fun images and icons they have for you to use. There are many options! Beware for the "premium only" icons, though, you can't get these for free. Keep scrolling down and there will be more free options!

Here is what I chose to do. Notice that I changed my background rectangle to pink, and added another white rectangle on top - but this time I used the option with the rounded corners rather than the square corners. I also added some squiggly leaf things - these are actually two stickers that I arranged to touch, making it look like one. You can easily flip, rotate, and otherwise edit the stickers from the properties window that shows up when you click the object. Remember, to change the layering of any object, right click on it, and click "send backward" or "bring forward". If you want to send it all the way to the back or front of your objects, click "send to back" or "bring to front".

Here is another option I played around with, just keeping the gray background.

Once you're satisfied, click the "save and share" tab. It should realize that you want to save it at 760x100 pixels, but just check to make sure. Then click "save photo"! That's it! Now it's ready to be added to your shop or blog.

Tell us a bit about yourself name, location, affiliations, personal stuff.

Hi! I'm Nicole Bomeli, everything woman at aBc Children's Designs. I live in Regent Square in the East End of Pittsburgh. I moved here from Charlottesville, Virginia 4 years ago when my husband started his surgical residency with UPMC. Before moving to Pittsburgh, I taught elementary school for 6 years. Currently, I am home with my kids, Alec 3 1/2 and Caroline 13 months.

Apart from creating things, what do you do?
My most important (and time consuming!) job right now is full-time Mommy. My husband works crazy hours, so the kids and I spend A LOT of time together. However, they are also the inspiration for everything I make for my shop, so maybe I'm always creating?! When the kids are in bed, I work part-time as an online math tutor for Tutor.com. I teach kids all around the country via an online "classroom" and get to keep my long division skills sharp. In my free time, I like to cook, garden and generally be outside in the warmer months.

What first made you want to become an artist?
I learned to sew from my mom and grandmother, both of whom are excellent seamstresses, though they would tell you that they are NOT artists since they have to use a pattern for anything :) My mom always made our Halloween costumes, created beautiful smocked dresses and all sewed party-ware or special occasions. Lucky for me, those clothes are still around and my daughter is wearing them now! Having my own kids made me want to renew those skills so I could make special things for them.

Please describe your creative process how, when, materials, etc.
All of my designs are inspired by my children. I started with huge flowered headbands when my daughter was born with peach fuzz for hair. Later, I discovered historic pillowcase style dresses and began making them for several friends. Everything else has just spiraled from there. Around Valentine's Day my son started asking why I only make things for girls, so I added a few "boy" style tshirt and hoodies so that he can have something special too. As a mom, I make sure that everything I make is easy to wash and wear since no one likes to hand wash kid stuff!

As far as "when," I sew in my upstairs "studio" whenever my kids are napping or my husband is around for a couple hours to help out. I knit whenever a project comes along. I love that knitting is something I can do with the kids around too. For materials, I try to stick to sturdy cottons and brand-name tshirts that don't shrink or fall apart with repeated washing.

What handmade possession do you most cherish?
My husband is a woodworker in his spare time. When we were in college he made me an inlaid jewelry box that still holds all of my earrings. My other handmade treasures are all the dresses my mom smocked for my sister and me that have now been willed down to my daughter.

As someone completely new myself, I can only say to network as much as you can! STE has given me a great gift of getting to know other Pittsburgh crafters and learning so much for each of you. My other other suggestion would be to always have your craft on you. i just made my kids appliqued hoodies so they can model for me where ever we go!
What are your favorite features on Etsy? What new features would you like to see?
I love Etsy! I think its great that it is so affordable and easy to use. I love to shop the gift guides and treasuries. As a very small time seller, I don't really have any problems with the site. My only issue is that I wish Etsy could accept larger photos. I'm always taking them on too high of a resolution and then having to do everything over again.

How do you promote your work?
My kids wear it! I also keep business cards on me at all times. I'm hoping to find time to check out Wildcard and possibly start selling there.

In five years I'd like to be...
making more children's clothes and designing my own patterns.

Tell us a bit about yourself name, location, affiliations, personal stuff.
My name is Kym Laret, and I live in Penn Hills. In addition to designing jewelry, I am also a stay-at-home mom of two preschoolers, hair dresser, and opera singer. My husband and I met while performing and both sing with the Pittsburgh Opera. I've also done shows with Opera Theatre of Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh Savoyards and sing weekly at Third Presbyterian Church.

Apart from creating things, what do you do?
All of my jobs are creative! It's awesome that I get to surround myself with art all day, every day. My main job, of course, is to be a mom. That requires extreme creative thinking, since my kids keep me on my toes all the time! As I mentioned, I sing professionally, and I also read, quilt, and crochet when I have time, and am not working on a jewelry project.

What first made you want to become an artist?
I don't know that I really had a choice. Everyone in my family (except my dad) is artistic. My brother is a painter, and my sister is a quilter -- she actually has an Etsy shop as well, The Quilted House. My mom has always sewn and she sings as well, so music and art were always a part of my life. I started out with music, thinking that visual art was better left to my brother & sister, but I wanted a fabulous tiara for my wedding, and my sister introduced me to the art of French beaded flowers. A couple of years later, I made myself some beaded headbands and fell in love with the process of playing with color and beads and figuring out what works.

Please describe your creative process how, when, materials, etc.
I basically take my little containers of beads out and just let them speak to me. Sometimes I put things together to see what'll happen, and sometimes it just flows. I also get a lot of inspiration from jewelry shows on TV. It helps me to see what's popular and sometimes that sparks something. I do a lot of my work at night, after I get my kids to bed. Since I've always been a night-owl, it works out well for me. Plus, I can't really have all of my supplies out when the kids are around. Whatever I've created the night before, I photograph in the afternoon while the kids are napping. It's amazing how many photos I take to get 5 good shots for my Etsy listings! I've also been doing a lot of work in the afternoon on my sunporch instead of in my basement craft area, because working in the beauty of the day really inspires me.

I love working with sterling silver, pearls, brightly colored gemstones, and lampwork beads. In fact, I'm planning to take a lampwork class to create my own pieces. My favorite bead store is Your Beading Heart in Irwin, mostly because she has a great selection and great prices, but also because she has a classroom that you can see from the main part of the store with a TV for the kids. I pack some snacks and can actually spend several hours shopping for beads without having to worry about the kids touching things they shouldn't.

My creative process is actually pretty organic: sometimes I'll have a jewelry design in my head, and on those days it just flows. When I really have to force it, it stops being fun, so I’ll pack it away and come back later. My goal is to find a good balance between following what the market demands, trends, and all that and following my heart and making what speaks to me. Finding that balance will allow me to have fun AND be successful!

What handmade possession do you most cherish?
Probably the quilt that I made for our new bed last year. It's a king sized quilt, and I had to move all of the furniture in our living room to lay out all of the blocks. It was such a labor of love, and its beautiful! It wasn't as heavy as I wanted it to be, so I made it into a duvet cover of sorts. It's red (my favorite color), green (my husband's favorite), and yellow (the color of the room). It was also a challenge to make a red and green quilt that didn't scream Christmas.

What advice would you give to artists who are new to the Pittsburgh craft scene?
Find a group of like-minded artists and network!

How do you promote your work?
I sell my jewelry at 2 shops in the Pittsburgh area: Crafted Treasures, in Monroeville, and Blossoms of Verona, in Verona; and I have their addresses on my business cards. I've started "accidentally" leaving them in all of the books I return to the library and I make a point of having them with me all the time so that if I have an opportunity, I can give them to someone. I also constantly wear jewelry I’ve made, especially to church. My church choir knows I make jewelry, so I make myself something new every Saturday to match my outfit. Also, I have a small display in the salon where I work -- and I make a point of at least wearing earrings when I'm in the salon so that people make the connection. Other than that, I tweet like a fiend and post everything on Facebook. I want to make a Facebook page just for Heavenly Creations, but there's just not enough hours in the day!

In five years I'd like to be...
in the black. My husband is very fiscally frugal, so he doesn't understand my obsession with beads when I'm not breaking even yet. But I've been doing this for less than a year. It takes time to build a successful business, but I'm getting there!

Tell us a bit about yourself –
Hi, I’m Diane Wright and my company is Diane Wright Designs – Handcrafted Jewelry. I grew up here in Pittsburgh in the North Hills and after living in New York and Los Angeles, I decided to come back home. I currently live in Aspinwall with my husband James. We have one son, Jamie, who is a documentary filmmaker and lives in Brooklyn. Prior to creating Diane Wright Designs, I taught English and Theatre at Rogers Creative and Performing Arts Middle School in Garfield – A Pittsburgh Public School magnet. In addition to being affiliated with Steel Town Etsy, I am also a member of the Pittsburgh Craft Collective and Mount Lebanon BNI (Business Network International).

Apart from creating what do you do?
Well, in one way or another I think that I am always creating. I love gardening and have both a vegetable garden and a perennial garden. Since I live in a townhouse most of my vegetables are grown in containers. I also like to travel and last year was fortunate enough to take a trip to China and hold a teenage panda in Chengdu, China.

What made you first become an artist?
My grandmother was a ceramicist so my earliest remembrances were in her studio. It was so much fun. My brother was also a visual artist. I started out in theatre as an actress in New York and Los Angeles and continued working in theatre after I returned to Pittsburgh working with middle school students. Teaching is an art also. After retirement I began creating jewelry in earnest with Diane Wright Designs. I was looking for something to keep my creativity going and I keep learning new and interesting techniques all the time. My grandmother kept creating until she died at the age of 92.

Describe your creative process
I would have to say that my process is organic. I do start with a drawing of concept of what I would like to create but it changes as I work with the piece. I am very flexible in terms of design and know it will change from inception to finished piece. I just keep looking at the work to know what I need to do next. I work mainly with peyote and herringbone stitches for my beadweaving and with copper and sterling silver for my hammered cuffs. I like trying new mediums and techniques and never know how they may all come together.

What handmade possession do you cherish?
I would have to say that the pieces I cherish most are two clay pieces my son made when he was in elementary school – one is a mug with a fox head and the other is an alligator. I also have a tile top wrought iron table made by my grandmother which is a cherished piece of mine.

Name 5 places in Pittsburgh to be
I don’t stray far from home so I spend a lot of time right here in Aspinwall, which is a neat little town. I also like what is happening with Lawrenceville. It is really reinventing itself as a creative and artsy destination. I still like going to Shadyside although it has changed greatly from when I was a young person. I also like going to the theatre – especially the City Theatre in the South Side and The O’Reilly theatre downtown. I think theatre gets into your inner being. I do watch TV and like the dramas like The Good Wife and Grey’s Anatomy. Although I do have to say Two and ½ Men and The Big Bang Theory make me laugh.

What advice would you give to artists new to the Pittsburgh Craft scene?
Get involved. Get out of the studio and get involved with some of our arts and networking groups that we have here in town. Do local craft shows. Don’t be afraid of not being ready – just do it and enjoy what you are doing. Have fun with your art!!

How do you promote your work?
In addition to having an Etsy site, I exhibit in about 20 craft shows each year in the tri-state area. I also have pieces at Wildcard in Lawrenceville and So Me in Glenshaw. I am also working on a few other shops in which to showcase my work. I also work a lot by referral and do in home/in office shopping and custom work.

Still creating jewelry and doing shows. Still having fun!!

Tell us a bit about yourself: name, location, affiliations, personal stuff.

Hello, my name is Mandy. I am married to my college sweetheart Matt and we have a two year old son named Jackson. I've lived in Western, Pa all my life. I grew up in a small town called Oil City. I graduated from Mercyhurst College in Erie in 2003 and moved to Pittsburgh a few years later. We live in the South Hills which is where my husband grew up. I love all things handmade. I have to credit my mom for my love of crafts and vintage things. I have such great memories growing up and going to local craft shows and antique shops with her all the time.

Apart from creating things, what do you do?

Besides being a mom to an awesome little boy :)... I am a part time bartender at the Sharp Edge Brasserie and have really come to appreciate good beer. I love to spend time outside with my family and friends. I love the summer and fall. It also seems like someone is always having a picnic or BBQ. There is always a festival or fair to go to. And I love sitting by a camp fire and enjoying good company.

What first made you want to become an artist?

I really have never thought of my self as an artist, just creative. Throughout my life I have always had a creative outlet of some sort. I was a dancer from the age of three right through college. I started making hemp jewelry one summer to make some extra cash. Then when we were planning our wedding, I decided to make the centerpieces for the reception, which turned into topiaries. My latest creative outlet is my wrapped bangle bracelets. I love making them!

Please describe your creative process how, when, materials, etc.

My creative process is pretty random. When it comes to the bracelets, I never know what they are going to turn out like. I usually pick up a few strands of yarn and start wrapping. Sometimes I like how they turn out... sometimes not so much, so I start over again. I make a lot of my things while my son is napping or late at night. It is my way of unwinding for a bit. I love working with silk flowers, hemp, yarns, beads. I also love photography and plan to dedicate some more time to it this summer.

Name your top five places to be in the Pittsburgh area, books/authors, movies/TV shows, songs/musical groups, and web sites besides Etsy.

1. The North Shore for a Steelers Game...there is nothing like the atmosphere there during a tailgate party before the big game. So much fun and half the time its with people you don't even know.

2. View through the Fort Pitt Tunnels....every time I drive through the tunnels coming from the South Hills I feel like I should take a picture!

3. Primantis...nuff said.

4. Kennywood Park....an awesome park with such an old time feel. A great place to spend a hot summer night.

5. First Niagra Pavillion...or as I call it "Star Lake". I love going there for a great concert. Lawn seats are reasonable and it's always a fun time with friends.

What advice would you give to artists who are new to the Pittsburgh craft scene?

Just go for! I am as new as you get :) I am hoping to participate in my first craft event in the coming months. I really try to spread the word about Etsy to anyone I know who is an artist. It is such a user friendly way to share and sell your art. It's also very inspiring.

What are your favorite features on Etsy? What new features would you like to see?

I love the alchemy feature. I love making custom orders and also putting out bids for things I cannot find anywhere else. The treasury is fun too, I just wish I could make more of them....always seems like its full.

How do you promote your work?

I do a lot of promoting through my Facebook Fan Page. I have great family and friends who keep the word of mouth going too! I will be the first to admit that I am not the best at self-promotion. Come to think of it....I need to make those business cards.

In five years I'd like to be...

Still happily married with a little brother or sister for Jackson. And, of course, still fueling my creative outlets. I also would like to devote more time to my photography.

Meet David and Chloe of SleepingBunny

David and Chloe of Etsy's Sleeping Bunny make up a talented pair of crafters who create adorable plush animals made from recycled sweaters and unique, handknit awesomeness. And they are members of Steel Town Etsy, of course! David answered the following questions while Chloe was at class, so what's written is from his perspective. :)

Tell us a bit about yourself.

Sleeping Bunny is made up of David and Chloe, who live on the edge of the city near Crafton. David is a full-time chef who currently works at Blue Dust bar in Homestead, and Chloe is a full-time student working toward a Radiological Technician degree.

Apart from creating things, how do you like to spend your time?

While crafting takes up a good bit of our time, we also enjoy just being out of the house. Our group of friends all meet once a week at a local bar to catch up on things. We both cycle recreationally and like being in the great outdoors when the weather's good.

What first made you want to become an artist?

Chloe has always had the artistic touch, and picked up knitting a few months ago while we were looking for a hobby to pass bad weather days stuck indoors. I've always known how to sew, but picked up making stuffed animals after seeing a book on it in a local bookstore. We love expressing ourselves, and are always looking for new ways to expand our crafter-tunities.

What does your creative process look like- how, when, materials, etc.?

I started out just making a few things from the book I bought on making sock animals, but after learning the basics and a few other techniques from the examples, I decided to branch out. My inspiration comes either from an idea I have for a specific finished product I want and then working the sock to match, or from the sock itself just asking to be made into a certain shape (i made a frog out of frog-printed socks, for example)

Chloe usually makes knits by seeing a yarn she thinks would make a great specific piece of attire. She's new to knitting, as I am to hand sewing, so her repertoire is still expanding. She just makes things that she likes and learns along the way.

What handmade possession do you most cherish?

I made a vest that I have yet to finish that I really like. It's deep brown corduroy with a blue and brown flannel lining. Chloe made herself a knit change purse that she uses, but I can't say if it's her most cherished. As far as the sock animals go, Chloe really likes this striped giraffe I made (she even has it in her Facebook profile pic). I'm partial to my sock-o-dile made from a green/brown argyle sock.

What advice would you give to artists who are new to the Pittsburgh craft scene?

Being new to the crafting scene ourselves, I consider us blessed to have done as much as we have so far. If I could give any advice, though, it would be to network. Steel Town Etsy is a great opportunity that's helped immensely, and we couldn't have done nearly what we have without it. I would also suggest buying the book "Crafty Superstar" by Grace Dobush. It really helped us lay out, and figure out, what to do when and how to do it, as far as selling crafts goes.

How do you promote your work?

We try to promote our work shamelessly. I always carry our business cards around with me so I can plaster them wherever I can. Any bulletin board is fair game to me. We also promote heavily on Facebook and through our circle of friends. Our blog isn't well publicized, but it's located at http://sleepingbunny.wordpress.com.

STE's First Chat and Meetups a Big Success!

Steel Town Etsy's awesome members met last week for our very first monthly online chat since the team's inception in January. We were so thrilled that 16+ people came together! Woot! Much gratitude to all who popped in to say hello.

The team also had it's first in-person casual meetups in the past week- our very first "live" gatherings! On Thursday of last week, a crew of chatty STE peeps showed up at Starbuck's in Sqirrel Hill to get to know one another and chat up all things Pittsburgh and crafty. And last evening, 14 social butterflies came out to Double Wide Grill on the city's south side for yummy food, refreshing drinks, and to network and bond! Thanks so much to everyone who came out!

It's so exciting to see the team explode with newbies (from 8 to 42 in just a few weeks) and everyone's commitment to connect with other Pittsburgh crafty folk, support one another, and build a strong team is fantastic! STE is so happy and honored to have such a rockin' and talented bunch!

Meet STE Member Megan from "That's What She Thread"

Hooray! It seems as though spring is finally on its way here to the Burg! And right on cue with the spring, Steel Town Etsy is growing in leaps & bounds! This week we’ve got another rock’n new member to talk about – Megan from That's What She Thread:

Tell us a bit about yourself name, location, affiliations, personal stuff.
My name is Megan and I live in Pittsburgh with my fiancé Nick of JetPack Agenda. We’re originally from Buffalo, NY. I went to the Art Institute here and fell in love with the city. I taught myself how to sew at a relatively young age and after much pressure from friends and family in the last few years started “That’s What She Thread”. I sell vintage-inspired aprons, dresses, bags, totes, hand-embroidered kitchen-y stuff and as of late, a few baby items.

Apart from creating things, what do you do?
I love hiking, cooking, baking, making home-made jam, knitting, crocheting, frequenting the library, gardening and spending time with friends. It just occurred to me that several of my answers still include creating things…

What first made you want to become an artist?
Until recently, I didn’t ever really connect my sewing with being an “artist”. It’s a really great feeling to be called that! To me it’s not something you choose to be. I just am a lousy shopper, so when it comes to birthdays and holidays my first thought generally is to make someone something. I had a few friends who were constantly telling me I should start trying to sell my stuff, so this July I gave in and started “That’s What She Thread”.

What handmade possession do you most cherish?
Currently, given the weather as of late, it’s this pair of slippers my sister made me as a Christmas gift. They’re hand-stitched out of upcycled sweaters that she felted in the washer. That and the super-cute business card holder my other sis crocheted for me. It really comes in handy and fits perfectly in my purse or coat pocket, wherever I go.

Name your top five places to be in the Pittsburgh area.
Frick Park – Nick and I love to pack a lunch and come out here. You can easily make a day of hiking, picnicking, and stopping at the Oakland central library on the way home!
Point Park - I love taking out-of-town friends down here on the T from Dormont, especially in the late afternoon before sunset.
Strip District – It is always bustling with people and culture and incredible smells. Also a great place to take out-of-towners, the fish market and open-air produce makes Pittsburgh feel like a big city. Not to mention the numerous different grocery stores (Asian, Mexican, etc.) make stocking up my kitchen super-easy.
Southside River Front Path – A beautiful and quiet summer walking/biking spot. Lots of off-the-path exploring to do here too.
My Backyard Garden – There is nothing better to me than to spend my day off tending to my veggies, herbs and flowers while hanging my laundry to dry in the sun and napping in the hammock.

What advice would you give to artists who are new to the Pittsburgh craft scene?
Just go for it! It took me a lot of prodding from friends to start my Etsy. I didn’t have much confidence that anyone would actually want to buy anything I made. But when I finally did, and the sales and compliments and custom orders started coming in, it’s an awesome feeling! There is a ton of people here in Pgh that respect handmades, and the support is incredible.

What are your favorite features on Etsy? What new features would you like to see? Etsy is so great and user-friendly! There is this awesome feature where when you list a new item you can immediately post it to your Facebook page. Once I sold an apron within 20 minutes of listing it because someone online saw the post. I also list sales I’m having on there. On the other hand I try to keep up with people “heart”-ing my items and site. Unfortunately, Etsy doesn’t offer notifications when someone has marked you or your stuff as a favorite, so every few days I go through my items manually and try to remember which hearts are new. I wrote a message to the Etsy powers-that-be but they wrote back saying it wasn’t a feature they were planning to add…

How do you promote your work?
I try to wear my stuff and carry around business cards as much as I can. I’m a little shy about self-promotion but it’s easy to work into a conversation when someone asks me where I got my super-cute apron from. I’ve had a lot of luck networking on my Facebook fan page . Recently I’ve started a MySpace page too. My boss at MexiCasa has also let Nick and I hang flyers and business cards on the bulletin boards there and we’ve been allowed to leave cards at a few other local businesses.

STE: Tell us a bit about yourself name, location, affiliations, personal stuff.

Pootinkies: I'm Paula Luna :) I live South of Pittsburgh. I moved around a bit in my life but Pittsburgh is my heart and soul. I started my company Pootinkies on Etsy after having my son. I saw a serious need for baby things that were not your typical pink and blue. Or ducks. Or nauseating pastels in general. *gag*

STE: Apart from creating things, what do you do?

Pootinkies: Number one I am a Mom! I am also a pediatric nurse. I have also done ER and Labor and Delivery as well.

STE: What first made you want to become an artist?

Pootinkies: I don't think I ever really sat down and thought-hey! I should become an artist! I have been doing creative stuff all my life really. My Mom is like that too so I am sure I got a lot of it from her. I never really liked the latest fashions or whatever was "in". So I have always done my own thing. I am just really lucky at this time in my life that people are liking what I do!

STE: Please describe your creative process how, when, materials, etc.

Pootinkies: Things just come to me. My brain is a funny thing. Most of the time I am laying in bed half awake and half dreaming and I will think of something. Then the next day I will attempt to create whatever is in my mind. Everything I would want for my kid that isn't available I just try to create. Then I add a dash of weird, a teaspoon of quirky, and a touch of scary and then voila! Success! I use soft fuzzy fabrics. My favorite is cotton. I can't stand the things out there for babies in the corporate stores. One layer of half polyester half cotton doesn't do it for me when it comes to a drooling teething kiddo.

STE: What handmade possession do you most cherish?

Pootinkies: My zombie weiner dogs, definitely. There is nothing like them. Everyone needs one to have a complete fulfilled life ;)

STE: Name your top five places to be in the Pittsburgh area, books/authors, movies/TV shows, songs/musical groups, and web sites besides Etsy.

Pootinkies: Oh boy. This question is a tough one. I think I am going to go with just the top 5 places in Pittsburgh:

1. Primantis-Because they do it up right. You put your fries and slaw all on your sammich. You have a cold Iron City beer to wash it down with. Then for at least an hour afterwards you must speak in a thick Pittsburgh accent that only people from here could possibly understand. It's a total out of body experience.

2. The Strip District-You can get anything you want here as far as food goes. Everything from Chinese food to Italian food to Mexican food. You can get it there. Plus I love the feel of the place. The vendors are out on the streets all summer long. It is the ultimate place to get your Steeler gear!!!!

3. Mt. Washington lookouts-You just can't get that kind of a city view anywhere else. It is breathtaking. It's cool to ride the incline up the hill and walk around on a cool summer night. Especially when there is a Steeler or Pirates game going on because you can see right down into the stadiums.

4. Kennywood Park-I love amusement parks. Kennywood has that nostalgic feel to it. Just the smells and the sounds as soon as you walk into that park. It just makes me feel like I am ten years old all over again.

5. The Point-This is a beautiful park that has an awesome fountain! You just can't experience three rivers all at once anywhere else.

STE: What advice would you give to artists who are new to the Pittsburgh craft scene?

Pootinkies: Be true to your own art. Don't be afraid that someone else isn't going to like what you are making. Plus-you are your biggest sales person. You can't be shy. Don't be afraid to ask your friends for a little help in the advertising department. Word of mouth is key. So don't be quiet about it.

STE: How do you promote your work?

Pootinkies: Facebook is a big one. I have a fan page on there that really helps. People all over the world are viewing it. I have business cards too. Plus meeting people and talking to everyone and anyone. I have met some of the coolest people just getting involved in groups like Steel Town Etsy. They are really creative and inspiring people. I have flyers and posters that I hang up in various places as well.

STE: Please finish this sentence, "In five years I'd like to be..."

Steel Town Etsy News: Snow, Fans, and Newbies!

The biggest news in the Steel Town area over the past couple of weeks is SNOW that has womped Pittsburgh twice! Urgh. One good thing about this blanket of sticky fluff covering everything, besides the pretty snow globe effect, is that lots of time holed up inside with hot chocolate and a blanky means lots of extra opportunity to craft!

As we know, a boatload of snow brings a huge number of hassles, too, not the least of which is making it impossible for anyone to get out and shop local handmade! :( Last weekend on February 6th, I Made It!, the area's most craft-tastic indie craft market, was forced to cancel its Valentine show "I Made It! Mine" due to inclement weather! Lots of hard work down the drain, or at least put on hold. And lots of time, footwork, and fundage lost by I Made It! admin on advertising and on renting space and tables and chairs! If you were scheduled to vend at the show, please consider waiving the return of your vending fee to help I Made It! recoup costs, or donating a little something to help reduce loss. Send an email for info on how to do so.

Help local crafters recoup costs and time, too, and while you're stuck in the house in this white out, take an online jaunt through some terrific Pittsburgh Etsy shops and spend some of your hard-earned mula on local indie artisans! ;)

Junior at the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh on November 22nd, 12–4pm. December's exciting craft-aganzas start off with I Made It! for the Holidays on December 5th, 12-5pm, at Pittsburgh's Union Project. The Last Minute Market happens On December 19 from 10 am – 6 pm at the Screw Factory in Cleveland, OH, a collaboration with Cleveland Handmade. Steel Town Crafters Represent at Steampunk Day!

Etsy Pittsburgh members Tamara and Niffer recently delighted in the neo-Victorian funkitude that is Steampunk, recently vending their wares at Brooklyn Indie Market's Second Annual Steampunk Day in late October. There they peddled their handmade fabulosity and took in the Fashion Show and all-around eye-candy!

Tamara had this to say about the day on her blog:

A rift in the space time continuum opened as steampunk fashion invaded Carroll Gardens in the Gowanus neighborhood of Brooklyn. Neither the rain throughout the day, that was downright torrential at times, nor the rerouting of the F train that normally stops around the corner from the market deterred adventuring enthusiasts who turned out in large numbers.

Tam! And Tam's table displaying her repurposed beer bottles decorated with Absinthe ad images.

Outside the red and white striped circus tent, attendees in their steampunk style could be seen strolling along side cars, buses, and modern businesses. Inside, stepping through the doors of the tent transported attendees back in time to an era that exists as an alternate timeline. Shiny brass gears and items inspired by steam powered technology mingle with Victorian fashion. Whimsical wares incorporating this technology with a Victorian aesthetic are the norm in this alternate era and were offered for sale by 20 different vendors.

America Unchained! Support and Celebrate Local Businesses and Artisans!

On November 21st, 2009, take part in America Unchained, a campaign by the American Business Alliance (AMIBA) in which everyone in the US is encouraged to support only locally-owned independent businesses for the entire day! This is a great opportunity to build awareness of indie artisans and crafters in your local economy, as well as any other non-chain businesses. Whether shopping, eating out, or doing other business for this entire day, AMIBA says, can "maximize the impact of your dollars and inject potentially millions more into the local economy!"

As the holidays and shopping madness fast approach, consider purchasing local handmade gifts for everyone on your list! Did you know that local independent businesses create about three and a half times the local economic activity as chains do?! AMIBA director Jennifer Rocke explains that indie biz "pays local employees, use the goods and services of other local indie biz, and give back to the community far more than chains." According to Rockne, independents generate 70% more local economic impact per square foot than chain stores! Pledging to buy only handmade for the holidays (or anytime) can give a huge boost to your neighborhood's economic well-being. You'll have the perfect opportunity at Pittsburgh's I Made It! for the Holidays at the Union Project on December 5th, when 50 crafty area vendors will gather to vend their handmade goodies!

The choice of what businesses to patronize can have huge and lasting consequences. Take America Unchained on the 21st as a chance to spread the word that small indie businesses like artisans and crafters are critical parts of your cities' cultural, social, and economic impact. Supporting them is better for us and for the community's health and prosperity!

Strange Folk Festival is Coming!

This September 26th and 27th, 2009, Lz and I are lucky enough to be participating in a great festival known as The Strange Folk Festival, near St. Louis, MO. (Technically, it's in O'Fallon, IL.) Our lovely friend Autumn Wiggins is the mastermind behind this driving force in the midwest. She has received love from her hometown city for her efforts, and Lz and I definitely wanted to be a part of it.

There are alot of activities planned for all to enjoy including great local food vendors, music performances, kids craft activities, live blogging stations, and a program Autumn and friends have put together known as The Upcycle Exchange.

If you happen to be around the Midwest at the end of September, come join us for some crafty fun!

Affordable Yoga in Pittsburgh!

Yoga. Outdoors. Free or Just a Few Bucks. Seriously? Yuh-huh- right here in Pittsburgh! Visualize yoga-ing on a brilliant summer morning or evening on the cool grass, energizing the body, breathing deeply, practicing pratyahara (sense withdrawal) by tuning out the sounds of the city to find your own inner happy place. Just what we need to wash the grime of a hard day's vending away, or rid our lungs of fibers from a day of mad knitting!

Several days a week, Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy and Breathe Yoga Studio offer classes led by trained yoga teachers in various areas of the city. Classes are open to all levels of students, from beginner to advanced. Move your body and rejuvenate your spirit while getting a good soaking of Vitamin D!

FREE YOGA (Yay!)
Stretch, strengthen, center, and breathe at FREE CLASSES hosted by Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy! At Schenley Plaza across from Oakland's Carnegie Library, teachers guide students through a full practice on the plaza lawn. Through the last weekend in August, take a Monday lunchtime yoga class at 12 noon from Pratique Yoga, or venture out on Saturday mornings at 10am for a class led by Candice Lain. Some days the classes are serenaded by local musicians. If the weather is iffy, classes may be held under the pavilion at the plaza. Limited mats will be available. (Thanks to Heidi Zelli of Pittsburgh Yoga Examiner for the photo and for tipping me off to these freebie classes.)

CHEAP YOGA (Yay!)
Through the end of September, Breathe Yoga Studio offers $5 CLASSES on Saturdays from 10:30-11:30am at behind REI at Southside Works, and on Sundays at 9am at Grandview Park in Mount Washington.

On most Tuesday evenings at 6:30pm, catch a class in Frick Park near Squirrel Hill just off of Beechwood Blvd and Nicholson, otherwise known as Blue Slide Park. Into the Fall, instructor Linda Meacci leads yogis through a mindful, challenging class surrounded by trees, bird song, and community. Classes are by donation (suggested donation $7)! PAY-WHAT-YOU-CAN YOGA

There are several organizations in the city with a specific mission to make yoga accessible to everyone, regardless of ability to pay. Becky of Folding Space Yoga explains the "pay-what-you-can system" on her website, stating that students simply pay "whatever you can spare." Becky teaches regular, indoor classes open to all skill levels every Thursday night at 6pm at The Union Project in Highland Park. She also offers ongoing classes at Magee Recreation Center in Greenfield on Monday and Wednesday evenings at 7pm.

Human Race Yoga holds regular classes for students based on the pay-what-you-can system, too, believing that everyone should have access to yoga "regardless of race, age, income, or education." They offer an ongoing beginners-level class at the Dormont Public Library on Tuesdays at 7pm, and an all-levels class on Thursdays at 7:30 right after Becky's class at The Union Project.

Check out these great opportunities to learn from compassionate teachers, and begin or grow your yoga practice at a cost anyone can afford!

COME PREPARED
Ahh... that post-yoga zone when the mind feels refreshed, the heart feels calm, and the body feels expansive and strong can be even more wonderful after a class under the glow of the sun and with the earth under our feet. And without depleting our pockets! Who could turn that down? But to make sure your practice fosters bliss rather than stress, it's important to come to class prepared.

Firstly, arrive early to get a good spot, and leave time for parking (especially in Oakland)! I've missed the beginning of several classes because I couldn't find a parking space. As the days can be very sunny and warm, put your sunscreen (water/sweat-proof) on and bring water to stay hydrated. Wear cool, unrestrictive clothing in lighter colors, and you may want to have a hat and sunglasses with you just in case the sun is too bright. Bring a mat if you have one, and/or a large towel as they tend to slip less (mats can become slippery on grass and from perspiration). I prefer to use my mat, sometimes on top of my towel- I always end up using my towel for something during class. I've found it helpful to bring an additional small towel or cloth for wiping away moisture from my body and my mat, and for covering my face if it's super sunny during sivasana (final relaxation).

A final pointer? Honor your body's limitations and don't push past your comfort zone. An asana (pose) should be comfortably challenging, not painful. If you have an injury, it's best to bring this to your teacher's attention before class, if possible, and don't be afraid to ask questions during class or after. Finally, keep it enjoyable!

To catch you up on arts funding happenings since Tam's and my articles about the need for Craftivism in saving The Arts, a recent timeline:

July 7: NEA Stimulus Grants Announced Today
Grassroots action through Americans for the Arts efforts led to a federal economic stimulus recovery package for the The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA)! As part of the $50 million federal, the NEA announced

July 9: SB 850 Rears Its Ugly Head
A huge blow as Senate Bill 850 came up again for back in consideration- the bill includes zero funding for the arts and total elimination of the PA Council on the Arts (PCA) plus another $1.7 billion in cuts to other remaining appropriations. Its passage would mean no grants to the arts for FY2009-2010. Immediate and significant action to support state funding for Pennsylvania's arts! Programs, jobs and services are at stake. TAKE ACTION NOW!

July 14: Save the Arts Rally in Harrisburg, PA

July 20: HB 1416 now zeros out PCA funding
Tthe PA Senate approved HB 1416 as amended, which included ZERO funding for the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. HB 1416 as amended will be sent back to the House of Representatives tomorrow morning where one of three options can take place:
* They concur with the changes made by the Senate and send the bill to Governor Rendell for his signature;
* They vote to nonconcur with the changes and send the bill to a conference committee for further diliberation and compromise, or;
* They take no action on the bill

PA ARTS NEEDS YOUR HELP NOW! There is seriously no time to waste... :/

What you can do:
1.Sign the on-line state petition to Save the Arts in Pennsylvania (it will take you only about three to four minutes).
2.Sign up for action alerts from Citizens for the Arts in Pennsylvania.
3.Contact your state legislators today through the Legislative Action Center.
Facebook Members: Sign up for the “Save the Arts in Pennsylvania” Cause and become a friend of Citizens for the Arts in Pennsylvania.

Pittsburgh's Crafty Scene: I Made It! Market on Vid!

Pittsburgh, PA's indie craft community is unique in it's richness, visibility, connectedness, intitiative, and commitment to supporting local artisans and all things handmade. A huge force in the 'Burgh's crafty scene is the I Made It! Market, the area's only "nomadic" indie arts & crafts market, which sets up in different city neighborhoods several times throughout the year. By doing so, and by partnering with organizations and venues sharing a similar vision, I Made It! seeks to connect Pittsburgh and surrounding communities with the economic and cultural vitality of local arts, artisans, and the craft scene. I Made It! was founded by Carrie Nardini (a former Etsy Pittsburgh member- yay!), a powerhouse in the local Handmade Revolution who has made Craftivism and supporting area artisans the "cool" thing to do, while creating a strong presence and following for the market and those like it.

CRAFTIVISM: Show Support for Much Needed State Arts Funding!

We've got an update to Tam's (of BarkerBell Herbs and Heirlooms) eloquent plea for advocacy for saving the Arts in PA! Some hopeful news on the NEA, but your support is still hugely important. Please act now, and spread the word- there is so much at stake!

The past few years have seen increasing declines in arts funding and arts-friendly public policies throughout the U.S. (Arts Action Fund). Arts funding impacts arts programs in schools (including K-12), the performing arts, arts organizations and individual artists, and the richness and diversity of our national culture and heritage. Additionally, The Arts generates billions of dollars in economic activity and federal tax dollars from income every year, not to mention millions of jobs (American Arts Alliance), the reduction of which will further tax our teetering economy! On the national front, recent news has been hopeful as the U.S. House of Representatives approved an increase in National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) by $15M (Americans for the Arts)! However, the Senate must be convinced to match this funding level, making public support and advocacy still hugely important.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?
Please visit Americans for the Arts E-Advocacy Center and write to your Senators to urge them to support the NEA funding increase, and join the Arts Action Fund (it's free)! Spread the word about this important issue to everyone you know. Your action is critical!

Each year, 40 percent of the NEA's program dollars go to state arts agencies to help maintain the stability of arts funding, policy, infrastructure, and access. BUT, this is conditional on each state appropriating its own funding for the arts, making the situation in Pennsylvania particularly dire. In May, the State Senate passed a budget bill that would eliminate all arts and culture grants in the state through the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts (PCA) and the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) from the PA State budget (Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council) for FY 09-10! While the PA House of Representatives Appropriations Committee voted down that Senate bill in June, we're now awaiting the House's own budget bill (Citizens for the Arts in PA). It is essential that PA voters let the House know loudly and clearly that funding for arts and cluture grants must be budgeted for!

WHAT CAN YOU DO?
Sign this petition. Join the "Save the Arts in PA" Facebook cause or follow the cause on Twitter. If possible, attend the "Save the Arts in PA Rally" on July 14th (see above). Tell everyone you know about what's happening, and ask for their help to stop it! And please, contact your Senators and representatives in the House to urge them to support state arts funding!

Etsy Pittsburgh's Own Brooklyn Four Invade Artists & Fleas and the Market at McCarren

This past weekend, the "Brooklyn Four" (so named in honor of the Fox Force Five) took a road trip to sell their crafty wares at both the Artists & Fleas Market and the Market at McCarren. Although sales weren't as good as hoped, we all sold a few things, gave out some business cards, and met many wonderfully interesting people.

We arrived early enough to enjoy a breakfast of fresh baked pastries from the Baker's Bounty stand and to enjoy a stroll around the greenmarket. Jenn (aka hairycarrot) and I (aka BarkerBell) spent the day outside at the park and had fairly good traffic past our tent all day. It had rained almost every day for the past two weeks in NYC so everyone seemed to just want to be outside enjoying the nice day.

Sadly, there was a street fair near the Artists and Fleas Market on 6th and not many people wandered inside to the market so Lynne (aka Charmed By Nature) and Niffer (aka 19 Moons) didn't have as heavy traffic as McCarren Park did.

We had gorgeous weather, around 82, sunny, with a light breeze up until we were about finished packing up at the end of the day when a summer downpour began. Fortunately our tent was still up at the time so we were able to stay mostly dry. The storm ended as soon as it began leaving a rainbow over Brooklyn. After we packed the van for our trip home, we enjoyed a delicious and well earned dinner at Tai Thai, on Bedford Avenue, near 6th.

It was a wonderful experience, great chance to gauge trends for the items we all make, and a great chance to get to know other team members better. Thanks to the other members of the "Brooklyn Four" for a memorable trip. Pictures from our trip are available on Flickr.

Help Save Funding for the Arts in Pennsylvania

Normally I try to keep my political opinions to myself and separate from the world of arts and crafts, but this topic is far too important to keep quiet about.

The Pennsylvania Senate, in their recent budget bill, propose to eliminate ALL funding for arts and culture, which includes museums.

From the Pittsburgh Arts Council website, "On Wednesday, May 6, 2009, the Pennsylvania Senate passed its version of the FY 2010 state budget (SB 850) with a 30-20 vote. The bill, introduced on May 4, eliminates all arts and culture grants in the state through the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts (PCA) and the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC). While this is an unfortunate occurrence, the budget process isn’t complete yet."

The arts enrich our community and are part of what makes Pennsylvania the wonderful state to live in that it is. In these times of economic hardship, the arts give people hope and funding is now more important than ever.

Please, take the time to visit the Arts Council website and learn more about what you can do.

Take the time to sign the petition at the very least. Let's make our voices heard!

The end of June, the Etsy Pittsburgh Street Team will be taking a road trip to Brooklyn, NY to vend at the Artists and Fleas Market.

Each of the leaves in my leaf necklaces is hand molded in clay using a real leaf. * no bugs were harmed in the making of my necklaces - they were sculpted from scratch...:)

Funvelopes offers fun envelopes, hence the name. Each funvelope is made from found paper and matched with a sheet of stationery (salvaged) & stamped with an matching image from my vast collection of rubber stamps. (Proof that she didn't fritter the 80's away doing something silly - she collected rubber stamps).Each funvelope are made by a person and not a machine. She even uses lick and stick glue on the flaps so you can seal them up.

BarkerBell offers a number of artistically created unique items. She combines vintage images and other favorites from the past with current trends and recycles and repurposes items whenever possible, creating many Steampunk, altered art, vintage image, & upcycled items.

Silentlotus has a deep fondness and appreciation for gems and minerals which makes creating with them a very spiritual process for her. She loves to blend them with sterling silver and pure brass because it enhances both the beauty and the properties of the stones.

A Foray into Silver Metal Clay

The Pittsburgh Etsy Team hosts workshops as often as possible to allow the members to learn from each other. The last of these workshops I attended was a silver metal clay workshop, hosted by Lynne, of Charmed By Nature.

From a drab, light gray lump of clay, I was able to make the wings above but pressing a brass stamping into the clay and cutting out around the design. The clay is a low firing version, so it's able to be baked in a regular oven and fired over a stove burner to finish it. A few more steps are involved, which I'll leave to the instructor, should she wish to hold future classes on the topic.

The workshop was fun and informative. Lynne is a very patient and knowledgeable instructor which makes her workshops all the more fun and worthwhile.

She'll be teaching an upcoming Polymer Clay workshop through the Pittsburgh Craft Collective and I can't wait to see what she inspires her students to make next.
